South Africa sits at the southernmost edge of the tigerfish's natural range in Africa. The species thrives in warm freshwater systems throughout sub-Saharan Africa — but in South Africa, the only viable population is in the Pongola River system, with Lake Jozini as the heart of the fishery.
Range & Habitat
Tigerfish are native to large tropical and sub-tropical river systems. In South Africa they're concentrated in the Pongola, Limpopo, and parts of the Olifants. Lake Jozini is by far the most accessible and productive water.
Behaviour
Pack hunters with extreme bursts of speed. They favour structure — drowned trees, drop-offs, river channels — and feed most aggressively in low-light hours.
Tackle
Medium-heavy spinning gear, 20–30lb braid with wire trace, and live or fresh dead bait. Topwater lures and large spinners also produce. Our boats are fully equipped — no need to bring your own.
