Pongolapoort Dam, more commonly known as Lake Jozini, is home to the African tiger fish (Hydrocynus vittatus)—one of Africa’s most powerful and exciting freshwater game fish.

The Pongola River system marks the southernmost natural limit of the African tiger fish’s distribution, making Lake Jozini one of the only places in South Africa where anglers can experience the thrill of catching this legendary species in its natural environment.

Africa’s Fearsome Freshwater Predator

The African tiger fish is immediately recognisable by its streamlined silver body, dark horizontal stripes, deeply forked tail and impressive set of razor-sharp teeth. Each tooth fits into a matching socket in the opposite jaw, allowing the fish to grip its prey with incredible force.

Built for speed and power, tiger fish are aggressive hunters that feed primarily on other fish. Smaller tiger fish frequently hunt together in schools, while the larger and more mature fish are often solitary predators.

For anglers, their strength is what makes them so unforgettable. Once hooked, a tiger fish can accelerate suddenly, strip line from the reel and launch itself completely out of the water in a spectacular attempt to throw the hook. Their hard, bony mouths and powerful aerial displays mean that landing one is never guaranteed even for an experienced angler.

Although African tiger fish occur across several parts of Africa, their natural distribution within South Africa is extremely limited. This makes the healthy population found in the Pongola River system especially important.
