Tiger fishing at Lake Jozini is a year-round adventure, but the action peaks in the warmer months. Water temperature drives the bite — once it climbs above 22°C, tigerfish become aggressive, fast and explosive.
Peak Season — October to April
Spring through early autumn delivers the most consistent tigerfish action. Surface temperatures push 24–28°C, fish are actively hunting in schools, and surface strikes are common at dawn and dusk.
Expect long days, hot sun and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms over the Lebombo mountains.
Shoulder Season — May & September
Water cools but tigerfish are still catchable, especially in the deeper channels near the dam wall. A quieter time on the lake — great for trophy chasers willing to work for fewer, bigger fish.
Winter — June to August
Cooler water slows the bite. Fishing is more technical and requires patience, but the scenery is at its best: crisp blue skies, low humidity and exceptional sunsets.
Time Of Day
First light and the last hour before sunset are the most explosive windows. Mid-morning and late afternoon often produce surface action when the wind drops.
