Tigerfish are powerful, toothy, and surprisingly delicate when handled poorly. A few simple practices dramatically improve post-release survival — and our guides apply them on every trip.
Tackle Choice
Use gear heavy enough to land fish quickly. Long, drawn-out fights exhaust tigerfish and lower survival rates. Wire traces protect against bite-offs.
Landing
Net or hand-land the fish in the water. Avoid lifting it into the boat unless necessary. Use rubberised nets to protect scales and slime.
Handling
Wet your hands. Never put fingers in the gills. Don't hold fish by the jaw — those teeth are real. Support the body horizontally.
Photography
Quick shot, fish low over the water, no dropping. Aim for under 30 seconds out of the water.
Revival & Release
Hold the fish upright facing into the current. Let it kick out of your hands when ready. Don't force movement.
